Optimized charging for 160,000+ connected EVs
Powering the UK’s first Vehicle-2-Grid tariff
Balancing multiple DERs to deliver Zero Bills Homes
Octopus Energy uses Kraken’s residential flexibility capabilities to lead in product innovation.
Not only have they designed products including specialist tariffs (rates) for customers with EVs, heat pumps, solar panels, and batteries, but they’ve done so rapidly, with astonishing results.Kraken has enabled Octopus to open up new revenue streams, from leasing EVs and chargers to developing innovative flexibility programs that provide grid services while engaging customers in a smarter, more affordable energy system.
Intelligent Octopus Go: cheaper EV charging overnight
Intelligent Octopus Go is the UK’s largest smart tariff, designed to offer cheaper, cleaner charging for EVs – without asking owners to change their behaviour.
After customers set a deadline for a full or partial charge, the tariff coordinates assets and delays charging while the grid is busy – topping up cars when energy is cheapest and greenest instead. The Centre For Net Zero found that this tariff reduces charging costs by £343 per year, and takes pressure off the grid, shifting peak load by 42%, saving £2bn by 2035 in infrastructure and energy costs, and supporting a more stable energy system nationwide.
Kraken processes over 100 million readings daily for Intelligent Octopus Go, bolstering accurate analysis and forecasting. The tariff also unlocks new revenue streams, giving Octopus Energy the ability to sell over 700 MW of flexibility to network operators as part of the UK’s grid balancing mechanism.
Octopus Power Pack: making V2G charging a reality
Octopus Energy has also used Kraken to pioneer the UK’s first commercial Vehicle-2-Grid (V2G) charging capability. Octopus Power Pack rewards customers with free EV charging in return for sending energy back to the grid to help balance demand.
A Powerpack driver charges up on the cheapest, cleanest energy overnight. Then after a day’s driving, they come home and plug back in, where Kraken automates the discharging of any leftover power to address the evening’s energy demand peak. When that peak is over, Kraken tells the EV to recharge. In exchange, Powerpack customers get their car charging for free, and again, Octopus is able to provide a valuable grid service.
Zero Bills Homes: optimizing multiple DERs simultaneously
Octopus Energy uses Kraken to simultaneously orchestrate solar panels, batteries, and heat pumps – creating a pioneering, commercially viable, home energy management system (HEMS). By automating the use of only the very cheapest energy, and selling excess solar energy back to the grid during peaks in demand, the utility makes money, while customers pay absolutely no energy bills whatsoever on these properties.
Through these Zero Bills Homes, Octopus has used Kraken’s innovative platform to generate yet another revenue stream, and is now working to make Zero Bill Homes standard in the UK (and to retrofit existing properties).
Integrating Kraken to maximize value
Octopus Energy is creating huge value by combining Residential Flexibility with other products like Kraken Customer and Kraken Field. This has enabled Octopus to extend their excellent customer service across the entire Distributed Energy Resources (DER) lifecycle, ensuring excellent communications throughout installation and into the daily orchestration of these devices.
Octopus has maintained and expanded additional revenue streams with incredibly high retention rates – the utility is now the UK’s largest lessor of EVs, for example.
