Scaling flexibility across a growing customer base

With more households adopting EVs, solar panels, home batteries and other low-carbon technologies, E.ON Next was seeing a huge shift in how customers wanted to manage their energy. The existing energy system wasn’t built to support this new level of dynamic energy management, and accessing flexibility at scale was complex.

They needed tech infrastructure that could support a broad range of consumer devices and make smart energy management effortless for customers. An operating system that could scale quickly and reliably – with customer onboarding and billing sitting seamlessly alongside Flexibility – would be a huge business advantage. And that’s where we came in.

“Kraken Residential Flexibility is proven flexibility infrastructure. It pushes boundaries and treads new ground that we can learn from.”

Steve Davies, E.ON Next Director of Strategy

Smarter charging, lower bills

E.ON Next launched a Residential Flexibility offering with Kraken in April 2025, implementing smart charging in homes to support their wider strategy, where flexibility is business as usual. Early results showed optimized EV charging (based on customer preferences and low-cost wholesale prices) meant real-world savings and more engaged customers. E.ON Next saw an opportunity for growth.

Introducing this service to households across the country needed technology that could scale. Confidence came quickly: vehicles charged as expected, integrations proved reliable, and Kraken worked closely with E.ON Next to iterate fast and expand support to new assets. Our end-to-end operating system meant they could move from testing appetite to creating a smooth, reliable service that fit naturally into everyday operations.

Turning interest into real impact

E.ON Next began to trade flexibility at scale within 12 months – far sooner than expected. Customers were able to sign up, onboard their car or charger and start realising the benefits of smarter charging, fast. Strong customer participation has made it easier to encourage behaviour change and build a more active, ongoing relationship with customers. With consistent engagement reflecting their trust in the service, E.ON Next can now optimize at scale, improve the customer experience and deliver increasing value over time.

The residential flexibility program has grown into a core part of E.ON Next’s low-carbon offering. It has helped teams to roll out new propositions and supports the company’s transition from an energy retailer to an active participant in the energy transition.

“The biggest win for me was Kraken getting the right journey, the right platform integrations, the comms working, all by July when we only really started talking to you about it at scale in April.”

Staying agile to steer the future

Using both Kraken Residential Flexibility and Kraken Customer, E.ON Next can bring together optimization, billing and account management into a single experience. This makes it easier for EON Next to onboard new assets – like EV chargers, heat pumps and batteries – accelerate new product delivery, and support customers all within a single operating system.

For E.ON Next, flexibility has become more than a tariff: it’s a pathway to a smarter, more engaged customer experience. As new propositions emerge, Kraken provides the foundation the business needs to innovate rapidly and responsibly.
